Where it all began...

eCom has been helping organisations develop digital learning content for the internet since the mid 1990s when it all began.

We worked closely with organisations to understand their goals and build solutions tailored to their needs, helping them use technology to make training more accessible and scalable.

This collaborative approach is still how we work today.

1998

Early digital learning programmes take shape

As organisations looked for ways to deliver training more consistently across teams and locations, digital learning began to play a bigger role.

eCom helped clients explore how technology could support their training programmes while keeping learning practical, accessible, and aligned with real workplace needs.

The first prototype of SCORM is introduced

In 2000, the first prototype of SCORM 1.0 (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) was introduced, establishing a common way for digital learning content to work across different learning platforms.

This created opportunities for us to help organisations develop more flexible digital learning solutions, enabling clients to protect their investment in learning.

Today, we still use SCORM for the same reasons.

Broadband transforms online learning

As broadband became more widely available in the early 2000s, we were able to deliver richer digital learning experiences including multimedia content, interactive activities, and online assessment.

We launched eNetAssess, our flexible digital assessment platform for creating and managing secure tests, helping organisations move from paper-based exams to reliable digital assessments that could be delivered at scale.

We also began working with SQA (now Qualifications Scotland) to develop, manage and deliver online assessments.

Expanding our learning technology portfolio

In 2004, Wendy Edie, now eCom’s CEO, joined the company as a director and helped guide the development of our learning and assessment platforms.

We launched eNetLearn, our customisable and accessible learning management system with real-time reporting and analytics, giving organisations greater visibility of learner progress and workforce capability.

2007

Supporting workforce capability and mobile learning

The introduction of the smartphone meant we could support clients in extending learning beyond the desktop - something organisations continue to rely on today.

In the same year, eNetEnterprise, our talent and workforce management solution, was launched, helping organisations manage competencies, track workforce capability, and gain clearer insight into learning and performance across their workforce.

Digital learning delivers impact across sectors

Our digital learning and assessment solutions were gaining recognition through a number of award-winning projects and partnerships.

These included an online assessment portal for oil and gas well accreditation for the International Well Control Forum, and a blended learning solution for the NHS One out of Four project, which received the Royal College of Midwives’ President’s Award for Partnership.

We also won the ‘Excellence in the Production of E-Learning - Private Sector’ award at the UK eLearning Awards, in partnership with Howden.

Leadership and international growth

In 2014, Wendy Edie was appointed as a Director at eCom, helping guide the continued development of our learning and assessment platforms.

This year also marked the official opening of eCom USA in Athens, Georgia, strengthening our ability to support organisations delivering digital learning programmes to international audiences.

2015

Recognition for accessible digital learning

In 2015, eCom and RNIB won the Education and Training Award at The Herald Scottish Digital Business Awards, recognising our commitment to delivering accessible digital learning for blind and partially sighted learners.

The award recognised both the accessibility of our bespoke eLearning and the role of our learning management system, eNetLearn, which was designed with accessibility and usability at its core to help organisations deliver training for diverse audiences..

2017

Digital credentials and skills recognition

Organisations were increasingly looking for ways to recognise skills gained through digital learning. So we launched eNetBadges, our digital accreditation tool for recognising learning experiences.

eNetBadges helps organisations acknowledge achievement and motivate learners through visible recognition - something that continues to support skills recognition today.

Secure offline assessments for remote locations

In 2019, we developed an innovative offline assessment solution for the International Well Control Forum, allowing secure exams to be delivered in locations with limited connectivity. The project won the Innovation Award at the eAssessment Association’s Awards.

In the same year, we secured Ufi Charitable Trust funding to develop a Virtual Reality assessment authoring tool, now eNetReality.

We also received a commendation at The Herald Scottish Digital Business Awards for our work supporting digital confidence training for Children’s Hearings Scotland.

2020

Helping organisations navigate the shift to online learning

As organisations around the world urgently looked to move training and assessment online, we supported organisations in understanding how digital learning could work for them in practice.

Com was among the first to run webinars exploring the opportunities and challenges of online learning, helping organisations explore what was involved, how to get started, and the benefits of adapting their training and assessment programmes for digital delivery.

Artificial intelligence enters learning technology

Artificial Intelligence (although previously available) became widely adopted and much easier to use. This opened new opportunities for us to support clients in areas such as assessment design and content authoring, but always with human oversight to ensure responsible use.

Today, our approach to AI is guided by five principles - ensuring innovation enhances learning and assessment without compromising trust, integrity or accountability.

Global recognition for learning impact

Our work with the British Council was recognised with a Silver Award at the Learning Technologies Awards for Best Learning Technologies Project in the Public and Non-Profit Sector.

The project used our eNetEnterprise platform to support English language learning worldwide, helping teachers and learners improve skills and access new opportunities.

This recognition highlights how our platforms can support large-scale international learning programmes. Read more about the award-winning British Council partnership.

From the early days of dial-up training to today’s AI-supported platforms, our focus has always been on using technology thoughtfully to support real learning and workforce capability.

Along the way, we have built solid long-term partnerships with our clients - an approach that remains central to how we work today.
