Resilience, Resistance and Readiness

Wendy Edie’s experience as CEO of eCom highlights the long-standing relationship between innovation and acceptance, particularly in the field of technology. In the organisation’s early years, the challenge extended beyond developing effective digital solutions; it also involved persuading people of their value and encouraging them to engage in the first place.

Resistance to technology was both familiar and persistent throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. eLearning, in particular, was often treated as complicated, hence eCom's strapline at the time 'eLearning made easy'. This prevailing attitude of ‘why change?’ made promoting digital learning an uphill battle. As a result, Wendy spent a significant portion of her working week not only delivering products but also presenting, educating, and advocating for the industry as a whole, championing its long-term value.

In 2020, almost overnight, attitudes shifted in the wake of the COVID19 lockdowns. Wendy recalls how quickly some organisations changed their perspective - Learning and Assessment technology was no longer optional; it became essential, and organisations that had previously deprioritised digital learning suddenly depended on it for their own survival. Tools and platforms that had once been ‘nice to have’, were now the backbone of daily operations; but of course, eCom was able to react to this new approach very easily and cope with the surge in demand.

For eCom, this period was not about scrambling to adapt to a global change, but about stepping into a space they had already inhabited for many years. Their steady resilience in the digital space, together with their experience, is a classic example of how eCom has always been resilient and future focused. In the face of change, the company has always been ready, not just with the technology itself, but with the experience and understanding of how to make it work effectively for themselves and their clients.
